Perch Fishing Made EZ
You know, those small but delicious tasties called Yellow Perch.

Yellow and Black, hang out in schools, only catchable on or near the dead bottom.

I've been chasing those rascals for over 40 years ... have talked to many (way too many) old fisherman who claim to know how to catch them. I've tried everything from little gold hooks to corn meal chum, minnows, red worms, nightcrawlers, maggots, jigs and everything in between. One old fella I met came up with the secret. I've adapted it, refined it, tuned it and used it ... and I packaged it up and called it my Perch Kit. Guess what? It works every time! 

Ever since then, I can take my family out in our boat on Lake Erie and sit in the middle of a huge pack of boats "Perching". When things are going well, everybody slams the Perch and finishes up our 30 limit in a couple of hours. So do we. When things are tough though, they'll pick one or two an hour.  I'll limit out in a couple of hours. Doesn't matter. My Perch Kit System Works! Here's a picture of the old Perch Expert and son from the Fall 2006. Our few hours on the water produced these including 2 Fish Ohio (13 inch +) and dozens of 10 + inchers. Take note of the beer bottle on right to give a perspective on size. Catches like these keep our freezers stocked over the long Northern Winters.

Yellow Perch Official Name: Perca flavescens

·         Length:6 to 10 inches

·         Weight:6 to 16 ounces

·         Coloring: bright green to olive to golden brown on back; yellow-green, yellow on sides; grey to milk-white below

·         Common Names: perch, lake perch, American perch

·         Found in Lakes: Michigan, Huron, Ontario, Erie and Superior

Though capable of adapting to a variety of habitats and water temperatures, yellow perch school near shore, usually at depths less than 30 feet. They feed in the morning and evening, rest on the bottom at night and continue feeding year-round -- to the gratification of ice fishermen. 

The food of juvenile yellow perch consists of zooplankton, other aquatic invertibrates or insects, and even an occasional zebra mussel. As adults, yellow perch consume less zooplankton and more insects and adult fish. Most of the fish consumed by yellow perch are shiners or minnow species, but smelt, trout-perch, white perch, round gobies, or even juvenile yellow perch may be eaten.

Perch are not scrappy adversaries like trout, but these full-bodied, large-finned panfish are a favorite and relatively easy target for breakwater anglers. Perch are especially esteemed for their "inner qualities" -- a flesh that is white, flakey and delicious.

These native fish have also been a mainstay of the lower Great Lakes commercial fishery, particularly on Lake Erie, where 11.3 million pounds of perch were landed in Ohio waters alone in 1981 and practically every year thereafter. But they have never figured highly in Lake Superior's commercial catch. In Lake Michigan, the perch catch averaged a respectable 2.4 million pounds a year from the time the first records were kept in 1889 through 1970.

But yellow perch numbers appear to have decreased drastically in some lakes since 1990. The states surrounding the lakes have put new regulations on yellow perch fishing. Wisconsin banned commercial fishing for yellow perch in Lake Michigan and cut the daily bag limit to five, beginning Jan. 1, 1997. Lake Erie, shared by Ohio, Michigan and Canada has seen larger quantities and larger size perch caught in 2006 and 2007 than in the previous several years. The bag limit in Ohio is 30.
